Botox Q & A

What is Botox?

Botox is a neurotoxin; a wrinkle-smoothing injectable made from a toxin derived from Clostridium botulinum. When used precisely in carefully measured quantities, Botox is a safe and extremely effective way to temporarily reduce wrinkles in the top portion of your face.

How does Botox treat wrinkles?

Botox prevents nerve-to-muscle signaling, which greatly decreases the repetitive muscle movements that lead to lines and wrinkles.

Which wrinkles can Botox decrease and prevent?

Botox can decrease and prevent wrinkles in the following areas of the face.

  • Glabellar lines between your brows
  • Forehead lines
  • Crow’s feet around your eyes

Expert injectors like those at MiKO Med Spa might also use Botox in other areas, for example, neck cords, in certain circumstances.

Other neurotoxins, including Dysport® and Xeomin®, are FDA approved for use in the glabellar lines and work similarly to Botox.

What is it like to get Botox injections?

MiKO Med Spa Medical Director Dr. Michael K. Obeng designed the Botox treatment protocol. Dr. Michael K. Obeng chose the aesthetic injectors carefully based on their specific skills and training, so a specialist always performs your Botox injections.

Your MiKO Med Spa practitioner cleans the treatment area and then performs a group of injections with a very thin needle. No anesthesia is needed because the process is generally nearly painless. But, if you have very sensitive skin, your provider can apply a topical numbing cream.

Your care provider makes injections in a specific pattern, typically a fan shape. The number of injections depends on the area.

  • Glabellar lines: five injections in the brow and forehead area
  • Forehead lines: five injections in the forehead
  • Crow's feet: three injections around each eye (six total)

After the injections, your MiKO Med Spa care provider cleans your skin and then applies an ice pack if needed. Mild redness and a tiny amount of blood around the needle puncture isn’t unusual, but you can use makeup right away if desired. The injection process takes only a few minutes, and there’s no recovery time needed.

How long does Botox last?

Botox can last for up to four months. To maintain your appearance, you can discuss an ideal treatment schedule with your MiKO Med Spa care provider. Many patients opt for treatments every three months.

For non-surgical wrinkle reduction, many patients say that nothing beats Botox. Call the MiKO Med Spa office or use online booking to schedule now.
